One of the executive orders that President Donald Trump issued early on in his presidency stated that for every new regulation added to the books, two existing regulations had to be taken off. There have been some questions as to how that order will apply to rules that have already been published but are not yet in effect.
One new reg that seems likely to get the ax is the speed limiter mandate, according to Joe Rajkovacz of Western States Trucking Associations.
"[Trump’s regulatory] freeze I think is a death knell for the speed limiter mandate — that’s an easy one since so many in the industry have ripped it apart," Rajkovacz told Overdrive Online.
The executive order is now being challenged in court. Public Citizen, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and a branch of the AFL-CIO filed a federal lawsuit to try to block the two-for-one rule. They cite rules like the speed limiter mandate and emissions standards as reasons why they want the order blocked.
Meanwhile, the national truck driver training standards that were supposed to go in effect this month have been delayed after President Trump's 60-day freeze on new regulations.
